The EX-I was a 2-seater concept sports car shown at the 1969 Tokyo Motor Show. Designed by Toyota research engineers to accommodate a front engine RWD drive train, the EX-I was styled specifically for long distance driving at high speed. Toyota executives had announced no plans for production of the futuristic model, though the EX-1 provided styling cues for the Celica released in December 1970.
The EX-1 had an electrically controlled roof mounted spoiler for high speed stability. The wrap around instrument layout had its switches equidistant from the driver. Twin exhausts and hood scoops hinted at an engine larger than normally used on Japanese cars.
